2012 CARIBBEAN CYCLING CHAMPIONSHIPS Tuesday 3rd July 2012
Over one hundred cyclists from across the Caribbean will converge on Antigua and Barbuda from October 20 – 21, as the Antigua and Barbuda Cycling Association hoststhe 12th Caribbean Cycling Championships.
President of the Antigua and Barbuda Cycling Association and Treasurer of the Caribbean Cycling Federation Cliff Williams says that the championships will see the best in the sport from twenty-seven (27) countries competing in Antigua. Antigua and Barbuda won the bid by beating out the closest rival, Curacao, by over 90% at the 2011 CCF congress held at the Holiday Inn in Montego Bay Jamaica.
“The 12th Caribbean Cycling Championships will be an event that will unite the Caribbean as we are expecting some of the region’s top cyclists from Belize down to Suriname. The local association will ensure that the competition maintains its high caliber and provides a safe and exciting course for the riders to compete at their highest possible level.”
The Time Trials on Saturday 20th October will see riders competing in two laps from the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium heading easterly onto Factory road, past Mount Joy Roundabout onto Jonas Road, turning at the end of Jonas Road heading back to Factory Road, North Sound, down to the Police Recreation Grounds making a turn heading back to the start/finish line at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Stadium to complete 24 miles.
.jpg) The main race on Sunday 21st October will commence from the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium at 9am taking the following route: Starting on the roads east of the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, out onto Factory Road, past Mount Joy Roundabout, Pares Village, making the right into Collins, Bethesda, Red Hill, Cobbs Cross, Falmouth, Liberta, All Saints, Jonas Road, back onto Factory road, North Sound making the right at North Sound Roundabout onto the roads surrounding the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium to the start/finish for 4 laps equaling 84 miles.
The 11th Caribbean Cycling Championships was held in Jamaica in 2011. The defending 68km Women’s Champion is ShaliniZabaneh of Belize with a time of 2hrs 03mins 45secs. Cedric Eustache of Martinique is the defending Male Champion with a time of 2hrs 48mins 50secs while Tamiko Butler of Antigua and Barbuda is the defending Caribbean Female Time Trial Champion.
Countries expected to participate include Aruba, Antigua and Barbuda, Anguilla, British Virgin Islands, Bahamas, Bermuda, Barbados, Belize, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Saint. Kitts and Nevis, Saint. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, Trinidad and Tobago, Suriname, Guyana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint. Lucia, USVI, Saint. Maarten, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Curacao and French Guiana.
The Organizing committee for the12thCaribbean Cycling Championships 2012 consists of Cliff Williams, Roland Morgan, Curtis Ryan, Franklyn Benjamin, Curtis Mckay, Sherifa Khan, Stenlie Matthew and Mervin Gore, assisted byPyramid Events Management Company.
