ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA TEAM FOR 2011 PAN AM GAMES

The Antigua and Barbuda Olympic Association is set to attend the 2011 Pan American Games to be held in Guadalajara, Mexico, 14th – 30th October.
 
A team comprise of 8 athletes will represent Antigua and Barbuda 16th Pan American Games, the 3rd largest Games in the world. The team will be spearheading by NOC Executive Member, Mr Daryll Matthew who was appointed as the Chet de Mission at the beginning of the year.
 
The twin island nation will compete in 3 sporting disciplines which include Athletics, Cycling and Swimming. 200m Pan Am Games Silver medallist, Brendan Christian will be defending his medal along with Pan Am Games High Jump Bronze medallist, James Grayman. The Athletics Association will also field Hammer Thrower, Althea Charles and 400m specialist, Richard Richardson. The Athletics team will be headed by Everton Cornelius.
Antigua’s sporting ambassador and 5th fastest man in the world, Daniel Bailey official informed the NOC that he will not participate in the2011 Pan Am Games. Bailey confesses that he is recovering from a nagging hamstring injury that being plaguing his performance for almost half of the season. Bailey is using the 2 months off season to rest and recover from his injury before he goes back in to training at the beginning of November. Cyclist, Robert Marsh is qualifies and will attend the event.

The Island most consistent and longest performing athlete is officially named as the Flag Bearer for the October 14th Opening Ceremony and will compete in the 40k Individual Time Trial and 160k Road Race. Antigua’s National Female Cyclist and Caribbean Female Time Trial Champion, Tamiko Butler will also compete at the year’s most major sporting event. The 2nd year cycling outstanding performance at the 2011 Caribbean Cycling Championships earn her a spot on the team, Ms Butler will compete in 20k Individual Time Trial and 80k Road Race.

The Cycling team will be managed by the Secretary of the Cycling Association, Roland Morgan. Swimming will be represented by Olympic Scholarship holder, Orel Jeffrey and female representation in the likes of Karin Clashing. The Swimming team will be headed by Edith Clashing who will handle a dual role also as the team Chaperone.

A presentation of Team Antigua and Barbuda to the Nation is expected to take place on Saturday 8th October they leave the island to Guadalajara on Tuesday 11th October.
 
President of the ABOA, Senator the Hon. Chet Greene and Secretary General, Cliff Williams is expected to leave the island on Sunday to attend the 49th Pan American Sports Organization General Assembly schedule to take place in Guadalajara, Mexico, October 10 -12th and the 2011Pan American Games. Special invitation is extended to both Executive heads as VIP guests of the game’s Opening Ceremony on October 14th and the Closing Ceremony on 30th October as well honours of medal presenters during the Games.
