ANTIGUAN STUDENT NAMED AMONG TOP 3 IN REGIONAL TOURISM ESSAY CONTEST

A 13 year old student of Christ the King High School, Ariana  Joseph,  has been named  by the Florida Caribbean Cruise Association among the top three students in the Senior Division of the 2013  Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association Essay competition.

 
Ariana secured second place and will receive a cash scholarship award of US$1,500. while her school will be presented with a cheque of equal amount.
 
 
The theme of the contest: “What makes my destination different from others?” presented an opportunity for each participant to explore the uniqueness of his /her country’s tourism products and services. It also gave them a chance to share their knowledge, passion and love for their country in writing, using descriptive, narrative and persuasive writings as they addressed the topic. Entries were adjudged on overall effectiveness, organisation, language usage and the umph which stirred an interest and desire to experience the destination presented.
 
Ariana’s essay successfully made it through all three rounds of the contest.  In the first round, her essay was selected by her school, the CKHS, as the school’s best entry in the senior category and was among the entries received  by the Ministry of Tourism for selection of the country’s best. Ariana’s entry was selected by the local judges and submitted to the FCCA’s Selection Committee.
 
Country Coordinator of the contest, Cynthia G Simon, Manger of Tourism Education, Training and Awareness within the Ministry of Tourism, extends heartiest congratulations to Ariana on her essay being numbered among the region’s best. She noted that having represented Antigua & Barbuda as the Junior Division Finalist in 2012, Ariana was determined to try again, to continue to develop her writing skills and has made her country, school, teachers and parents, proud.
 
Antigua & Barbuda’s Junior Division Winner of the National Leg of the Contest, Felicia Edwards of Freetown Primary School will receive a cheque in the amount of US$200, as a reward for her effort and achievement in reaching the regional contest. The Ministry extends congratulations to all students who participated in the local leg of the contest, expresses thanks to the participating schools, especially to Ariana and Felicia for their selection as Antigua & Barbuda National Winners and for representing the twin-island destination at the regional level.  Special congratulations also to Ariana for copping 2nd place in the Senior Division of the regional contest. Thanks are extended to the Zone Officers in the Ministry of Education, all participating schools, students and their parents for their ongoing support towards this project.
 
This year, Barbados took the first place in both Junior and Senior Divisions of the contest, with St. Maarten and Nevis taking 2nd and 3rd place respectively in the Junior Division.  Trinidad and Tobago completed the top three positions in the Senior Division by securing 3rd place.
 
The FCCA’s annual essay contest aims to raise the awareness of Tourism among Caribbean youth and used by the Ministry of Tourism to complement its own tourism awareness programmes for school children.
