HORSE RACING BACK ON THE CARDS
Tuesday 15th January 2013

Fan appreciation, homage to a fallen jockey and fun and games will be the main characteristics when the Antigua Turf Club hosts its first race meet of the year on January 27, 2013.

President of the Turf Club Neil Cochrane said the feature race of the day, The A1 and lower going over a distance of 7.5 furlongs, will be named in honour of the late Omoro Wilkins.

“Omoro was an accomplished and respected member of our fraternity. The day of the meet will mark the sixth year since his tragic death as a result of a freak accident during a workout session. His memory and his contribution are always remembered by the Turf Club, and, at the next event, we want to publicly pay tribute to him, at the place where he made his mark, by naming the feature race in his honour,” Cochrane said.

Fans are also in for a treat, with a gift for everyone who pays to enter the race. This, Cochrane said, is the Turf Club’s way of saying thanks for the support.

There will also be attractions for the children; with a complimentary bounce castle and bungee jump apparatus.

The donkey race, a crowd thriller, will also be reintroduced on January 27.  Cochrane took the opportunity to “express thanks to Karen Bryan of  Karen’s Cook Shop and her team for coming forward as a sponsor and organizer of this initiative.

Also slated on the card is a two-furlong race for both male and female fans respectively with cash prizes up for grabs.

Cochrane was also happy to inform that the upcoming race meet also brought with it a guaranteed prize money payout of up to EC$12,000 for owners of participating race horses.
Admission is $15 for adults and $10 for children. The gates open at noon with the first race starting at 2 pm.

An after party featuring Sir Lance and the Stonewall family will follow at the end of the last race.
Immediately on the heels of the meet, on January 31, the Turf Club will hold the Annual General Meeting during which time a new executive will be elected.  The time and place for the AGM will be given in another correspondence.
