NATIONAL WARRI TEAM WINS: GOLD, SILVER & BRONZE MEDALS AT WORLD CHAMPS! Wednesday 14th November 2012
Antigua and Barbuda's National Warri Team won Gold, Silver, Bronze and 4th place at the 8th Annual Swiss International Grandmaster Warri Championships which was held November 8 - 11, 2012 in Switzerland.
Dr. Hon. Winston Baldwin Spencer, Prime Minister and avid Warri lover, rejoiced at the good news on hearing of Antigua and Barbuda's success and stated that he looks forward to welcoming the World Championship Event to Antigua and Barbuda in 2013.
The team was comprised of World renowned Warri Grandmaster, Mr. Trevor Simon, who added yet another gold to his repertoire. This would make the 7th occasion when Simon has won the gold, beaten only by his team mate Mr. September Christian on a previous occasion. In this year's event however, Christian, who is also well known internationally in the warri fraternity was edged out to take the bronze by fellow national, Mr. Ulysses Henry who won silver. The fourth place position was won by Mr. Walwyn Barton.
The outstanding performance was hailed by Minister of State: Sports, Sen. Hon. Winston Williams Jr. as a very significant one since it reconfirms Antigua and Barbuda's position as World Champions in the field of mind sports, particularly Warri. Senator Williams also stated that world record holder Trevor Simon must be highly commended for his incredible performance over the years and his service as a true sports ambassador. The Sports Minister of State also had high commendation for the other members of the team and congratulated them all on their outstanding performance.
The Antigua and Barbuda Warri Association which was recently relaunched following efforts by the Ministry of Sports two years ago was also in for high praise for their commitment to further develop the sport of warri across our twin island nation. Senator Williams further stated that the Government of Antigua and Barbuda had contributed $8,000.00 to the Antigua and Barbuda Warri Association to assist in offsetting costs related to the team's participation in the event.
President, Mr. Alvin Phelps, also joined in praising the mind sports athletes and shared that he was not surprised since it had been the plan to bring home all categories. Mr. Phelps further added that he expects a similar performance when the World Warri Championships comes to Antigua and Barbuda in 2013.
Senator Williams expressed appreciation for the work of the past and present Executives, members and supporters for their involvement and commitment to develop and promote the game of Warri.
The National Warri Team returns to Antigua and Barbuda this afternoon.
