OLD ROAD U17S, EMPIRE'S U14S AND U12S TRIUMPH IN MINI-SOCCER FEAST Tuesday 1st May 2012
BUCKLEYS – Old Road Under 17s and Empire’s Under 14s and Under 12s won their respective age-groups in the first Mini-Soccer Fest on Sunday at the Buckleys School Playing Field Old organized by the Young Warriors Football Club.
Old Road won their three matches defeating Willikies 2-0; Young Warriors 5-1 and Seaglans 5-2 in the four-team contest. Roy Yorks, who scored four goals, was the leading goals-scorer and adjudged the most valuable player of the U17 category.
Empire U14s defeated Seaglans 2-0 and Young Warriors 3-2 in the three-team competition. Rodney Lawrence was named Empire’s best player while Warriors’ Derijah Prince toped was the leading marksman with four strikes.
The U12 Grays Farm boys triumphed over Young Warriors 1-0 before overcoming Young Germans 2-0. Rasheed Lewis of Empire was named the best player.
There were also two exhibition female matches in which Young Warriors U17 girls were defeated 4-0 by Empire U14 boys but the G-Warriors bounced back to defeat Seaglans U14 mixed team 2-1 on penalties after the match ended 1-1.
Old Road and Empire and the outstanding individual players, including Seaglands’ Tyrese Hughes – who scored the best goal of the day – received trophies and gifts donated by the sponsors: Cool & Smoot, Island Original, Sparkling Detergents and GCS Bottling (Paradiso Water).
Former Sportswoman-of-the-Year Karen Joseph and 1996 calypso monarch Davidson “King Bankers” Benjamin made the presentations the winners.
