SWETES STORM INTO SEMI-FINALS
Thursday 1st September 2011

A late surge by Wadadli Events Rental Swetes saw them overcome host club, inet Young Warriors 4-1 on Wednesday in the quarter-finals of the Cool & Smooth Men’s Championship Cup of the Warriors Cup 2011.

With the game deadlocked at 1-1 with 15 minutes remaining, Swetes scored three times, including a hotly-disputed penalty, at the English Harbour Playing Field to move into Saturday’s semi-finals against the winners of Thursday’s quarter-final match-up between Jennings Grenades and Fort Road.

The game turned decisively when the referee awarded Swetes a spot-kick which the Warriors vehemently protested, claiming that the infringement took place outside the area.
Akeem Weekes, who had earlier given Swetes the lead after 35 minutes, converted from the spot to put his side 2-1 ahead. Weekes’ double strike makes him the leading marksman with seven goals from four matches in the competition.

Five minutes after Weekes restored Swetes’ lead, Duvaughn Thomas rifled a free-kick into the roof of the net before Craig Mason added a fourth in added time.

Warriors’ had battled back from going behind when Firrmley Barthley cut inside off the right to steer a left-footer into the opposite corner of the goal to make it 1-1 eight minutes after half-time.

Weekes had given Swetes the lead when he dispossessed a defender inside the area to drill a low shot home.

In Thursday’s other quarter-final match, Hoppers oppose Bullets at 6:30pm at EHPF.
