CELTICS, SWETES, WARRIORS SECURE LAST EIGHT PLACES

Champions Celtics FC, formerly Goldsmitty, and Swetes stormed into the quarter-final of the Cool & Smooth Men’s Championship Cup of the Warriors Cup 2011 when comfortable on Saturday and later that day they were joined by host club, Young Warriors.
 
Celtics blunted Shot Gun 5-1 while Swetes, spurred on by Akeem Weekes’ hat-trick, brushed aside home side, John Hughes, 6-1, in their Group A encounters before Warriors overcame Jennings Grenades 2-1 in a hard-fought encounter at English Harbour.
 
Celtics finished with six points but Swetes, who are level with them, can win the group when they oppose Shot Gun on Monday in the last match.
 
Beaten by Swetes in the previous game, Celtics rebounded as early as the 13th minute through Uroy Peters’ fourth goal of the competition and bustling striker added his fifth eight minutes later.
 
Jodi Joseph hit the third on 38 minutes as Kevon Sheppard and Tishawn Hodge put the result beyond doubt in the 52nd and 63rd minutes.  Kieron Richards scored a consolation goal for Shot Gun on 57 minutes.
 
Weekes, who now have four goals from two matches, sent Swetes flying on seven minutes before adding further goals in the 31st and 37th minutes.
 
In between his strikes, Errol DeCastro netted the second on 24 minutes before Koesi Francis and Craig Mason rounded off the scoring in the 63rd and 70th minutes.
 
Jamie Phillip, who awfully missed a sitter in front an open goal when John Hughes were trailing 1-0, make it 4-1 10 minutes in the second half of the 70-minute affair but by then the result was inevitable as the home side bowed out with a single point.
 
Warriors had to avoid defeat in their last group game but managed to over Grenades, who despite having already qualified for the quarter-finals, who gave it a good fist.
 
Grenades took the lead when the top goals-scorer Elroy Shaw notched up his fifth from the penalty spot with quarter of an hour played.
 
Guest players, Conroy Browne equalized five minutes from the break, and Conroy Hall, netted the eventual winner from the penalty spot on 74 minutes.
 
Grenades poured forward in search of an equalizer but Warriors hang on for the three points with took to five, one less that their opponents who topped the group.
