CASCADES FALL ON ANTIGUA FEMALE BASKETBALL - MUCH IMPROVEMENT NEEDED IN WOMENS BASKETBALL
Monday 23rd May 2011

The visiting Cascades of the University of the Fraser Valley, British Columbia are getting ready to rap up their five (5) week visit of Antigua/Barbuda.

The 37 contingent from the University of the Fraser Valley visiting Antigua/Barbuda including the Cascades Women’s Basketball Team

The 15 member Cascades Women‘s Basketball Team under Head Coach Al Tuchscherer is part of a 37 contingent from UFV, participating in basketball and Physical Education on the twin islands.

Besides putting on basketball clinics, involving schools and Wings youth basketballers, the Cascades have played four games against Antigua Female Basketballers, mainly, the Vipers and combined school basketball teams. The Antiguan female players were hardly able to put up any competitive fight but received some good lessons in team work, hard work and organization, as the Cascades flooded the court with fast-breaks, drives and perimeter shooting. Each game was a blow out, the last being against the Vipers on Friday night that ended 60 –32.

According to Coach Tuchscherer, "This was our most balanced game of the trip and it was a good way to end our tour. The Antigua Barbuda Basketball Association and the people of Antigua have been tremendous hosts."

However, besides the one-sided affair, Tuchscherer admitted that "The tour was an unbelievable experience for our team. The people have completely embraced us, the island has so much history and beauty, and the basketball experience was something our team will never forget"

The Cascades have been invited back to Antigua for the 12th Annual Gillian Brazier Basketball Shoot-Out, scheduled for November 23 - 27, 2011.

Meanwhile, Antigua/Barbuda women‘s basketball needs an injection of serious players and serious work, if it is to get back to, at least, a competitive level. A lot of women basketball players have fallen off and without a league and persons willing to coach womens basketball, it will be a long wait before Antigua becomes competitive again.

Other female sports have also fallen off, especially netball; however, the Antigua/Barbuda Football Association has resumed its women program which is showing signs of development and improvement.

UFV conducts P.E. Sessions

Thirty-seven Student-Teachers from the 'Champions for Health Promoting Schools' program from the University of the Fraser Valley, British Columbia are on their final week of their five (5) week visit to Antigua.

UFV & Antigua Schools Physical Ed Teachers

According to Joanna Sheppard, Instructor of Kinesiology and Physical Education at the University of the Fraser Valley, this is the 6th year that UFV personnel have been visiting Antigua at the invitation of the Ministry of Education, and assisting the schools in Physical Education and equipment.

The Student-Teachers have visited Pares Secondary, TN Kirnon, JT Ambrose, Jennings Primary, Five Islands, and the Adele School conducting Physical Education classes and teaching the importance of Physical Education for a healthy Nation.

On Friday, May 27, the visitors will host a 'Unity Games' Sports Day at the JT Ambrose School from 9:00 A.M. - 12:00 P.M. and at the Five Islands School from 1:00 P.M. - 3:00 P.M.
