COUNTDOWN TO SIR REGINALD SAMUEL CLASSIC
Tuesday 3rd May 2011

The 3rd Annual Sir Reginald Samuel Track & Field Classic is scheduled to get underway on Saturday, May 7 and Sunday, May 8, 2011 at the YASCO athletics grounds.

The Concerned Parents/Teachers Sports Association has hosted five (5) Track & Field Meets in the 1990’s but had to discontinue because of major disrepair to the YASCO Track. However, in 2009, the CPTSA, because of a lack of local Meets, decided to rebrand the Athletic Event in honour of Sir Reginald Samuel.

Sir Reginald has been one of Antigua/Barbuda’s foremost Sports Officials. Sir Reginald played an important role in the development of sports at the Antigua Grammar School where he taught, and succeeded Mr. Daintes Livingston as Director of Sports in the 1970’s. He was added the responsibility of Chairman of the National Sports Council.

As an artist and cultural icon in Antigua/Barbuda, Sir Reginald is responsible for the designing of the Antigua & Barbuda National Flag, the Statue of the Family at the State Insurance Corporation building on Redcliffe St., and the Statue of Prince Klass.

The Sir Reginald Samuel Track & Field Classic will start at 12:00 pm with an Opening Ceremony involving all the local competing teams, and clubs from Tortola and Nevis. Last year, more than 120 athletes from the neighbouring islands participated in the Meet, giving some strong competition.

Officials from the Ministry of Sports and President of the Antigua & Barbuda Amateur Athletics Association, Dr. Rodney Williams and sponsors representatives are expected to address the assembly.

On Friday, May 6, athletes will compete in the 100M, 200M, and 400M heats, starting at 3:00 P.M. at the YASCO grounds. All registered athletes are advised to be on time for the heats.

Meanwhile, Clubs and Schools that have not yet submitted their registration forms with the names of their athletes and registration fees, will have up until Tuesday, May 4, to do so. Registration will close at 7:00 P.M.

Clubs and schools should get in touch with members of the Wings Youth Track & Field Committee: Richard Lindsay at telephone 724-6778, Everton Cornelius-772-0799, Randy Allen-774-0063 or Jamille Nelson-722-8324. The appeal is a serious one since late registration will not be accepted.

Athletes will compete in six categories: U-11, U-13, U-15, U-17, U-20, and Open, Male and Female.

Trophies will be awarded to the Most Outstanding Athlete in each category and medals will be presented to athletes up to third place in the Finals.

Parents and the General Public are encouraged to come out and support the children.

Admission to the YASCO grounds on Saturday and Sunday is $5.00 for children and $10.00 for adults.

A number of private and governmental agencies will be assisting the CPTSA in hosting the Meet, including the Antigua & Barbuda Amateur Athletic Association, the National Olympic Committee, National Solid Waste Management, Central Board of Health, the Red Cross, Ministry of Health, Premier Beverages, CocaCola and Subway, to mention a few.

Monetary sponsorship has come from State Insurance Corporation, Hutchinson (Antigua) Ltd, agents for Lysol, Eastern Caribbean Amalgamated Banks, Ministry of Sports and First Caribbean Int’l Bank.
