ABFA SCORES BIG IN U-16 LEAGUE; BUT WINGS MAKE DISAPPOINTING START
Monday 28th March 2011

After a successful completion of its senior leagues and U-13 Development League, the Antigua/Barbuda Football Association continues to show signs of improving the talent of football in the twin island State.

The ABFA latest venture is the hosting of the Under 16yrs League. The tournament, encompassing at least 24 teams, in two zones, started last Saturday, March 19, with games slated at three venues, Radio Range, Dredge Bay and Parham.

Wings Football Head Coach, Thaddeus Price chiding his players for a dismal display in their first U-16 encounter against Future Kings.

Wings, although with most of its players of U-14 status, looked liked a scared bunch and hardly showed the courage they are accustomed to. In their match on Saturday morning, March 26, at Parham, Wings were clearly intimidated as they allowed four (4) goals from Future Kings.

Andy (Job) Christian remains, undoubtedly, the most versatile athlete Antigua/Barbuda has produced.

Christian a graduate of the St. Joseph’s Academy and past sportsman of the Villa Sports Club, was one of the first basketballers to obtain athletic scholarship, to Maryville College, Missouri.

Christian played Basketball, Football and Track & Field, outstandingly, at the National level and Cricket for Villa. He is ranked as one of Antigua/Barbuda’s top goalkeepers, alongside Wesley Challenger and ‘Picking’ Greene.

Christian is one of the few athletes from Antigua/Barbuda who has won gold at the Carifta Games. He participated in the 1977 Carifta Games held in Barbados. Legend has it that Christian who had qualified for the Pole Vault Event, did not appreciate the use of the Fiber-glass pole and asked to send for the bamboo pole he had become accustomed to using at SJA. The pole was quickly sent on the first available flight to Barbados, in time for Christian’s Event, which he won, vaulting 3.51 meters.
