The Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association (ECVA) has retained its executive. The thirteen Presidents from the respective ECVA national federations met on Saturday at their annual general meeting to elect a five-member executive charged with taking the association to the next level over a four-year tenure.

The executive is comprised of five re-elected officers of which four nominations were unopposed, and one challenged. Returning are President Glen Quinland (St. Kitts & Nevis), Vice President Sabina Mason (Tortola, BVI), Treasurer Wilbur A. Harrigan, OBE (Antigua & Barbuda), Secretary General Brian Louisy (St. Lucia), and Phierry Stephens (French St. Marten) who was re-elected from three nominees with an overwhelming majority to serve as Member.

The group also sat down for robust and lengthy discussions aimed at charting the way forward and to fast track the sport of volleyball across the region.

In his opening remarks, President of the North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation (NORCECA) and First Vice President of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Mr. Cristóbal Marte Hoffiz stated that although he is excited with the progress made by the ECVA, the years ahead leading up to 2014 will require a greater effort.

“We are doing many things. There is a lot of room for improvement, [but] we must all work more. We need to support each country and work with them,” Mr. Hoffiz said.

“If 2010 was successful, that is history. Now its time to stand and work to make 2011 more productive and it will be done. However, this requires understanding, co-operation and tolerance. We all need to have a clear vision,” the NORCECA President said.

Meanwhile, the ECVA was reassured of the commitment of the Antigua & Barbuda Ministry of Sports to the development of a national volleyball programme in the twin-island state. Representative from the Ministry Mrs. Ann Jonas in the feature address, commended the Antigua & Barbuda Amateur Volleyball Association’s (ABAVA) for establishing volleyball as “a sport to be reckoned with” and for continually making a difference in the community.

The meeting also bade farewell to two outgoing Presidents who have decided not seek re-elections in their federations after many years of outstanding and unwavering service. Rupert Sorhaindo and Richard Simon from Dominica and Grenada respectively, have left impressive legacies for which the ECVA is proud.
