LET THE FINAL COUNTDOWN BEGIN Wednesday 7th December 2016
From Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge:
With considerable anticipation and excitement, the town of San Sebastian in La Gomera is again gearing up for the annual Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge! Bright blue race flags adorn the harbor promenade and the little town is buzzing with excitement as rowers, families and friend descend on the smallest island in the Canaries, where Christopher Columbus first set sail for the Americas more than four hundred years ago!
All 12 teams are now well installed in the marina, and yesterday Race organizer Carsten Olsen held the first of many safety and operational briefs for the participants. Over the coming days, each crew will go through a regimented process of preparing their boats, which will then be meticulously scrutineered by race officials Ian Couch and Lee Fudge.
At the start of the week, the boats will remain on shore while equipment is tested and provisions properly packed. Once certified, all crews will be keen to get them into the water and embark on some genuine sea trials in proper Atlantic waters off La Gomera.
Stand by for more exciting news and updates as we progress towards the start-line, which is scheduled for the morning of Wednesday, December 14th at 11:00 am (weather permitting of course!).
Team Facing It, boat pictured above, will include Antigua Resident Wayne Johnson, raising funds for the Smile Foundation in South Africa. Keep track of the challenge on their Facebook page here.
