Team Antigua, hopefuls for the 2017 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, have been taking their ocean rowing training for the challenge to new heights, with training on and off the water, and recently taking on strong weather from (then) Tropical Storm Matthew in efforts to accustom themselves to harsh weather they may encounter in the 2017/18 rowing challenge. Take a look below at their post-row interview, re-capping their tumultuous trip from English Harbour to Jolly Harbour in tropical storm conditions.
From Team Antigua:
“When Tropical Storm Matthew threatened Antigua earlier this month, Team Antigua - Atlantic Rowers thought it would be a good idea to go out rowing offshore in the peak of the bad weather. They knew that tropical storm conditions were occasionally experienced in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, and as potential participants in the December 2017 edition of the TWAC, Team Antigua wanted to make the most of the strong winds and big waves. The trip from English Harbour to Jolly Harbour was only a minuscule fraction of the mileage that the team will hope to conquer in the TWAC2017 but in the storm they learned more than they had hoped to or more than they had bargained for. Tropical Storm Matthew was forming into a hurricane which later became a very deadly one at that causing damage across the Caribbean basin, the Bahamas and along the East Coast of the USA. Team Antigua hopes to take on the 2017 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge starting from La Gomera in the Canary Islands on December 12th, and ending 3000nm miles away here in Antigua. Each team participating in the challenge is rowing and raising funds for a charity and Team Antigua will be rowing for ocean conservation.
While Team Antigua is currently in training, with an overnight row set to happen soon, the team cannot participate in the challenge without sponsorship.
