AUA COM DONATES TO MSJMC IN THE 2013 SEASON OF GIVING
Thursday 12th December 2013

Press Release: Community Service is a priority for American University of Antigua, College of Medicine (AUA COM). The 2013 Season of Giving is no exception as the AUA’s Community Outreach Programme helps to make a difference in the lives of the health fraternity, children in the community as well as those at the Mount St. John Medical Centre.

AUA COM a Key Sponsor in the 2013 MSJMC Annual Children’s Christmas Party

To bring cheer to the children in the community, the AUA COM has made a cash donation to the Mount St. Johns Medical Centre (MSJMC) Annual Christmas Party. The MSJMC organizer for the event Koren Norton who heads the Social Services Department expressed appreciation for the donation. Norton stated that Christmas is a time of cheer and goodwill and the Institution wanted to do its part in bringing joy into the lives of some of the children that they have seen throughout the year as well as some who are referred to Centre from other agencies. We have a group of staff who work together every year in the planning and execution and we also have a number of volunteers and sponsors who have faithfully supported us for the three years.

The Children’s Christmas Party which will be held on Friday December 13, 2013 will feature a Santa, bounce castle, face-painting and distribution of gifts to include a photo keepsake for each child. Koren also added that for some of the children, this will be their only fun activity for the season and the staff at the MSJMC will make every effort to make the event a very special one for them

AUA Ambassadors to host a "Toys for Tots" Event for the Children warded at the Mount St. John Medical Centre (MSJMC)

On December 18, 2013, the AUA Ambassadors will present gifts of toys to the patients in the Children’s Ward at the MSJMC as part of their community outreach programme this season. Public Relations Officer & Community Service Director of the AUA Ambassadors, Antiguan Medical Student, Ms. Michelle Benjamin shared that this is one of a two part initiative to create a child friendly environment at the island’s main hospital. The second component of the programme will be the establishment of a library at the MSJMC to provide opportunities for the children to maintain or develop good reading habits even while recovering from illness. The AUA Ambassadors are inviting members of the AUA Community and the public at large to donate toys for the ‘Toys for Tots’ initiative and books for the library at the MSJMC as a meaningful way to bring cheer to the children who cannot be at home with family and friends due to illness.

The AUA COM Ambassador group has a membership of fifty-four medical students who are focused on presenting a positive outlook of student culture and the institution through community outreach, education and student upliftment.  For additional details on their community outreach programmes and how interested donors can help to make a difference please contact Michelle Benjamin, michellebe@aumed.net, or Brian Wong (President) brianw@auamed.net
