INTERNATIONAL ALCOHOL ART COMPETITION LAUNCHED
Monday 2nd July 2012

The Substance Abuse Prevention Division is encouraging students in Antigua and Barbuda to participate in the recently launched International Alcohol Art Competition.

Substance Abuse Prevention Officer, Norma Jeffrey–Dorset, said that the details, which were received from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), revealed that the competition was launched by Australian students to “enable other students to express their feelings about the dark side of alcohol”.

Although there will be a monetary prize for the Australian winner, an International Award Certificate will be presented in each category for overseas entries. The entry can be almost anything, but must be so creative that it can be social networked; and could take the form of a song, a tribute, a play, a painting, a photo, a rap, a joke, a video, a story, a poem or an event.

Further competition details can be accessed on http://www.facebook.com/pages/Alcohol-Competition-WIN 1000/314077465336696 . Each entry should be uploaded on the competition Facebook page before 9 a.m. on 8th September, 2012.

The Ministry of Health, Social Transformation, Consumer Affairs and Local Government recently wrapped up a series of sensitization programs on the occasion of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 2012.  In their joint message in observance of the day, Minister of Health, Social Transformation, Consumer Affairs and Local Government, Hon. Willmoth Daniel, and Parliamentary Secretary, Senator the Hon. Malaka Parker, warned of the dangers of substance abuse, to include alcohol abuse, and encouraged everyone to unite on the issues impacting our youth.

Ms. Jeffrey-Dorset sees this competition as an opportunity for young people to begin to take a serious look at the ways alcohol affects not only them as individuals, but their peers and communities; and to find ways of addressing these problems. She said that despite there not being a monetary award, she encourages them to participate as this type of international exposure will only benefit them in the future.
