STAGES AND IMPLEMENTATION OF STYROFOAM BAN

The Government of Antigua and Barbuda earlier this year began Stage 1 of the nation-wide Styrofoam Ban. Below are the stages of the ban, and alternative products available in Antigua and Barbuda.

Stage 1: July 1st to December 31st, 2017
Ban on importation and use of food service containers to include: clamshell and hinge containers, hot dog containers, bowls, plates, and hot and cold beverage cups. Depletion of stock on hand to be followed by monitoring and confiscation.

Stage 2: January 1st to June 30th, 2018
Ban on importation and use of plastic utensils (spoons, forks and knives), straws, fruit trays, meat trays, vegetable trays and egg cartons. Depletion of stock on hand to be followed by monitoring and confiscation.

Stage 3: July 1st, 2018 to January 1st, 2019
Ban on importation and use of "naked" Styrofoam coolers. Depletion of stock on hand to be followed by monitoring and confiscation.

The ban will extend to all businesses within the food service industry to include large and small supermarkets, grocery stores and the catering sector in Antigua and Barbuda. Airline Carriers, Private Charters and large Cruise Liners will be exempted from the ban until further notice.

Alternatives to Styrofoam available in Antigua and Barbuda include:

  • Sugar cane/bagasse
  • PLA Cornstarch (non-GMO)
  • Wheat straw
  • Bamboo
  • Cardboard/ Paper
  • Areca Palm
  • Potato Starch

All Alternative products listed for approval by legislation will be Tax-Free.
