ABHTA DONATES EC$10,000 TO GARD CENTRE Friday 2nd August 2024
The Antigua & Barbuda Hotels and Tourism Association (ABHTA) has generously donated EC$10,000 to the Gilbert Agricultural and Rural Development (GARD) Centre in solidarity and support following a recent burglary. During a brief ceremony, Craig Marshall, Chairman of ABHTA, presented the check to June Jackson, Executive Director of the GARD Centre. The contribution was warmly received, especially in light of the recent break-in that resulted in the loss of EC$150,000 worth of equipment and supplies.

The GARD Centre, a non-profit organisation based in Mercers Creek, St. Peter, has been a cornerstone in the community for over 34 years, providing valuable training and support to vulnerable youth, men, and women. The Centre offers programs in agriculture, entrepreneurship, technical vocational skills, business development, and job services, impacting the lives of over 8,000 trainees.
The burglary, which occurred between June 14 and June 17, 2024, was particularly devastating as it targeted essential equipment used in the Centre's training programs. Items stolen included kitchen appliances, agricultural tools, and technological equipment crucial for course delivery. Despite the setback, the Centre resumed training sessions on July 1, 2024, with limited resources, demonstrating resilience and determination to continue serving the community.
In light of this unfortunate event, the GARD Centre is working on enhancing its security measures to prevent future incidents. This includes the installation of burglar bars, security cameras with alarms, and manual patrols. The Centre has already received contributions for some of these upgrades, as well as replacement items from corporate partners.
The ABHTA encourages its members and the wider community to support the GARD Centre in its rebuilding efforts. The organization welcomes donations of equipment, funds, and other resources to help restore the Centre’s operations and continue its mission of empowering the vulnerable.
