CHEFS AND BARTENDERS SHINE AT CULINARY COMPETITION

The 6th Annual Mango Pineapple Culinary Competition took place on Saturday July 9th and Sunday July 10th, where chefs and bartenders from Antigua’s most prestigious establishments took top honors. The entrants were treated to a Sunset Cocktail held on Sunday evening where the winners were announced.
Chef Richard Alphonso of Blue Waters Hotel walked away with the top prize in the Chefs category. Ronaldo Collantes representing The Inn at English Harbour was second and third place was awarded to Ferne Boland of The Tides. Alphonso also captured the “Most Innovative Chef” award.
The winner in the Bartenders competition, Hermitage Bay’s Kason Tapper, dazzled the judges and the crowd with his creativity and skill to reign Bartender Supreme. Tapper was also adjudged the “Most Innovative Bartender”. Geraldine Depeza of Jolly Beach Resort and Spa took second place, while Indiana Jones, representing St. James’ Club was third. Depeza’s charisma won her the “Personality Award”.
The Pastry Chef competition had some thrilling moments and close calls, but Zinzi Mpande of Jumby Bay Resort had the winning desert. The Verandah claimed second place through the talents of Coleen Joseph, while Christopher Terry of Sugar Ridge secured the third spot.
Chairperson of the competition, Tameka Wharton hailed the event as a success, and extended warm congratulations to the winners. She added, “On behalf of the Mango Pineapple Committee, special thanks must be extended to all the sponsors, participants, volunteers and other contributors that made The Mango Pineapple Culinary Competition 2011 possible”. Mango Fest takes place on August 13th and 14th 2011.
