Small but perfectly formed, this week sees the return of the Antigua Charter Yacht Meeting after a one-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Although only sixteen boats have been able to enter this year as restrictions continue, kudos must be given to the Board of Directors and team who have made this happen. The docks are filling up nicely as the superyachts make Antigua their first stop-off point in the Caribbean for the start of the 2022 charter and race season.
Chairman of Antigua Charter Yacht Meeting, Paul Deeth says, “There is a very happy vibe at the 2021 Charter Yacht Show, all participants are enjoying being able to see, chat, mingle with colleagues and visit yachts in a relaxed environment, there is great positive energy for a better and bigger show in 2022.”
Fellow event organizer Alison Sly-Adams of Antigua Sailing Week expresses her thanks to the Charter Yacht Team. “Having the Boat show take place is critical for the Antiguan events to follow for the season. First, to show that events can take place safely given the global pandemic and secondly to give confidence to the event organizers and racing yachts all planning to attend the events for the rest of the season. It has been a very difficult 18 months and we very much hope that we can collectively rebuild confidence in visiting yachtsmen that 2022 will see Antiguan racing back on the map."
The first official regatta took place last weekend in Jolly Harbour for the Jolly Harbour November Regatta paving the way for the Hightide Series, Nelson’s Pursuit before the end of the year, and weekly racing leading up to the RORC Caribbean 600, the Superyacht Challenge, Antigua Classics, the Jolly Harbour Valentines Regatta and Antigua Sailing Week.
Sly-Adams goes on to say, “Antigua Sailing Week already has 60 entries so the sailors are showing us they are ready to come back. We are now working feverishly to ensure we can deliver safe, fun, and competitive racing back off the South East coast of Antigua in 2022.”
