CHADD CUMBERBATCH VISITS THE CUSHION CLUB Tuesday 8th June 2010

The latest author to visit the Cushion Club was Chadd Cumberbatch who made time for the members of the kids reading club during a brief stopover from his native Montserrat on Saturday 5th June 2010.
Cumberbatch read three pieces – ‘Emancipation’, ‘Drum’, and ‘Fandango’ – from his forthcoming collection Ya Ya Surfeit. The book is set for release on June 26th in Montserrat, with an Antiguan launch expected to follow sometime after. Cumberbatch is a well known playwright and actor, visual artist, teacher, and will be remembered by Antiguan audiences as the preacher in the film No Seed. Ya Ya Surfeit is his first poetry collection and has been described by venerable writer, also from Montserrat, Sir Howard Fergus as “well crafted and nuanced”.
While the content is primarily for an older audience, Cumberbatch managed to tailor his presentation for the youngsters of the Cushion Club who especially responded to the rhythmic ‘Fandango’. Cumberbatch is only the latest author to visit the Club and share original works; past visitors have included Pink Teacups and Blue Dresses author Floree Williams, the History of Bethesda and Christian Hill author Joy Lawrence, and Fat Cat and the Mystery Next Door author Patricia Harrington, another regular visitor to the island.
The Cushion Club is a voluntary reading club for kids run by Cedric Holder and Boy from Willow Bend author Joanne C. Hillhouse. It operates out of the Senior Centre in Lower Gambles.
