CUSHION CLUB

The Cushion Club has once again honoured its commitment to reward a sixth grader from the Buckley’s Primary school with the presentation of a gift certificate to former student Shouzan George, the 2011-2012 recipient of the award. The award is designed to encourage consistently high performance in Humanities-based subjects (i.e. English, languages, history, social studies and subjects of that nature). It was first presented in 2005.

Recipient of the Cushion Club prize to an outstanding Buckleys Primary student, class of 2012, accepts her gift certificate from Cushion Club member Tamare Bannis. 

One of the Buckleys teachers who has liaised with the Cushion Club over the years is Leah Robinson. Like Shouzan, who is now a student at the Antigua Girls High School, Ms. Robinson has since moved on and is now part of the faculty at Villa Primary. But her enthusiastic support for activities that encourage achievement on the part of her students such as those offered by the Cushion Club was recognized by the Club with a donation to the Villa Primary School Library in her name.

The Cushion Club is a reading club for kids operating for 15 years, give or take, in Antigua and Barbuda. Its activities are simple: reading with children every Saturday during the school year; its purpose to help children to grow, expand their minds, imagination, and appreciation for the literary arts. The Club, which currently meets at the University of the West Indies Open Campus (Antigua and Barbuda) recently ended its 2012 to 2013 season with a party and play. Expect it to return when school resumes.
