The Panerai Prize Giving for the 29th edition of Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta was held in the historic surroundings of Nelson's Dockyard, English Harbour. Guest of Honour was Sir Rodney Errey Lawrence Williams, KGN, GCMG, the 4th Governor-General of Antigua and Barbuda. Sir Rodney Williams spoke passionately about Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta and congratulated all of the participants and supporters of the regatta. Regatta Chairman, Julian Gildersleeve gave thanks to all of the volunteers for the regatta and also its sponsors, especially Platinum Sponsor, Panerai for their continued support. Gold Sponsors Mount Gay Rum and Presidente Beer were also given a special mention and hundreds of attendees gave the Prize Giving Ceremony a rousing atmosphere, cheering as each team took the stage to receive their awards. After the ceremony, Antiguan band 1761 played a live set with the dance floor jumping. Antigua Classics social programme will come to a conclusion on Tuesday 19 April, with Gig Racing and Cream Teas from 2pm-5.30pm at the Admiral's Inn, Nelson's Dockyard.

There is no better time to get a quote from a skipper, than with a trophy in their hands! Here are the words of the 12 Class Winners as they left the stage.

Cameron Fraser, Janley, Vintage C and the Panerai watch. “Unbelievable! It was a great effort from the crew and two years of hard work renovating the yacht. I had not expected anything and hoped just to get a full week of sailing. So to win four in a row, best in class, best in division and best in the fleet makes me very happy and really proud of the crew.”

“Classics is the one place in the world where Classic and Spirit of Tradition yachts come together from Europe and the United States. There are also people here from New Zealand, Australia and Scandinavia. Classics is a great coming together. It isn't about the quantity of boats that show up, it is about the quality and this year quality is definitely up with fabulous boats like Adix and Columbia here for the first time. We have been coming here since 1999 and I still think it one of the best regattas.”

Steve Glascock, Zemi, Traditional Racing.

Steve Glascock, Zemi, Traditional Racing. “We are so happy to be part of a growing class, the Carriacou sloops is a great class and many thanks to all of the sloop racers, we have been thrilled to be part of this group.”
Juerg Zimmermann, Lazy Leg, Classic GRP B.

Juerg Zimmermann, Lazy Leg, Classic GRP B. “We have had a great regatta, it has been a lot of fun. I am used to light winds, so when the sea is flat, we tend to do well. It was great racing, probably more technically difficult than recent years and the team running the regatta have been very well organised, they have done a great job.”

Don Ward, Frolic, Classic GRP A.

Don Ward, Frolic, Classic GRP A. “ Very happy, it has been a couple of years since we have won our class at Classics. A big thank you to the team who performed very well.”

Sean Lucie, Dragonera, Spirit of Tradition A.

Sean Lucie, Dragonera, Spirit of Tradition A. “ We had a top crew, of the 17 crew members 12 were captains, there were no loud voices, the atmosphere on board was really easy, we loved every minute of it.”

Jordi Agustí Arbosse, Paloma VI, Classic D.

Jordi Agustí Arbosse, Paloma VI, Classic D. “We have been sailing with young children and this is a great regatta to bring them to. There are other families sailing here and it is an excellent way to introduce young people to regattas. Everyone has been so friendly and for children it is safe and shows them how to behave.”

Nigel Bower, Heron, Classic C

Nigel Bower, Heron, Classic C. “The regatta has been a lot of fun, we had a crew that really worked well together and I think this has been our best regatta ever. We have been second in class before but it is glorious to win.”

Ben Diamond, Argo, Classic B.

Ben Diamond, Argo, Classic B. “We are a school ship and these guys and girls are aged between 18 and 21 and have just done a 90 day trip. Most of them had never sailed before and now 90 days later, we are at Classics, winning every race and our class and they are as good as any professional crew, these guys absolutely nailed it.”

Paul Goss, Adix, Classic A.

Paul Goss, Adix, Classic A. “It has been a fantastic regatta for us. Even though the wind was very light, the boat went very well. For a regatta like this, we need to get extra people involved as it is very important to get the choreography spot on and not make mistakes, there were a lot of sail changes during the regatta and all in all it went very well. The race committee need to be commended for the way they set up the races, we are very happy, it has been great. Classics attracts a great selection of boats from the small traditional sloops right up to boats like Adix and we will definitely come back for the next regatta if we can.”

Gerald Ranier, Mary Rose, Vintage B.

Gerald Ranier, Mary Rose, Vintage B. “This year is Mary Rose's 90th birthday and we are also celebrating ten years of coming to Classics. We had a fantastic party atmosphere on board, it was really alive! We come here because of the friends we have at Classics, the people who come here have made this event what it is and everybody contributes.”

Mat Barker, The Blue Peter, Vintage A

Mat Barker, The Blue Peter, Vintage A. “Four wins, well we can't do better than that. It has been really nice to have a regatta, where you are not holding on, hoping that nothing is going to break. The light air has meant there has been a lot more skill involved, which is why we did so well, naturally!”

Guest of Honour was Sir Rodney Errey Lawrence Williams, KGN, GCMG, the 4th Governor-General of Antigua and Barbuda.
