FIRST RACE IN 2010 ANTIGUA CLASSIC YACHT REGATTA UNDERWAY TODAY Friday 16th April 2010
This is it – the kick-off race of the 2010 Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta gets underway momentarily outside the mouth of this harbour on a 20-mile course called “Old Road.”
The race features five legs around three bouys, provided the competitive racers aboard the gorgeous classic yachts windward, leeward, reaching and beam sailing. The seas are flat and wind is light, which will most likely favour yachts below 45 feet in length.
The race features six classes of yachts: Traditional – fishing or cargo vessels, built or converted to sail; Vintage – yachts with a full keel in original condition designed and built before World War 11; Classic – yachts with a full keel designed and built after World War 11; Classic GRP – fiberglass boats with long keels and descendants of wooden boat design; Spirit of Tradition – yachts built recently using modern methods and design, but retaining the original grace and style of the old classics; and Tall Ships – sail training and passenger vessels.
Classic yachts in the 2010 Regatta range in length from 24 feet to 145 feet.
The Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta is the first of nine sponsored worldwide by Panerai, and is hosted by the Antigua Yacht Club.
