SINGLE-HANDED RACE KICKS OFF ANTIGUA CLASSIC YACHT REGATTA Wednesday 14th April 2010
The 11th annual single-handed race for classic yachts up to 75 feet in length will kick off the 23rd annual Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta tomorrow in a 12-mile course outside Falmouth Harbour.
Hosted by the Antigua Yacht Club, the Regatta is the first of nine classic yacht regattas sponsored worldwide by Panerai as the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge.
The single-handed race will feature classic yachts 75-feet or larger, grouped in two classes: Large Classics (over 45 feet) and Small Classics (45 feet and under). Each yacht is skippered by one sailor, with a second person on board to help only in the event of an emergency.
The single-handed race is sponsored by Carib Bean Coffee Roasters, who will present the first place yacht in each class with a unique ivory coffee bean, carved by Michael “Scrim” Strzalkowski, at a special ceremony Friday evening at the Antigua Yacht Club. The winners’ names also will be recorded on the Carib Bean Coffee Cup perpetual trophy displayed at the Club.
The Friday evening presentation is known as a Sundowner Celebration hosted by Carib Bean Coffee Roasters on the Yacht Club’s lawn. The Sundowner is very popular with yacht crews and their guests, featuring dark and stormy cocktails and music by Marty Reno. Start time is 5:30 PM.
