ANTIGUA CLASSIC YACHT REGATTA - RACE 2 Tuesday 24th April 2012
In stark contrast to yesterday the second of the four races in the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge, Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta took place today under bright sunny skies. Almost too good to be true sea and wind conditions were reported out on the 12 mile Butterfly course by all but the last to finish who were assisted over the line by a squall of thundery rain rolling down the Guadeloupe channel.
With a steady 12 – 14 knot wind and calm seas, today was rated by competitors and photographer’s alike as being a “Phenomenal” race day
The magnificent schooner Elena under - her mightily impressive - full "'7 sail" sail plan gave photographer’s some wonderful footage as did ‘picture perfect’ Eilean amongst her equally picturesque contenders in the Vintage Class. Stepping ashore from racing aboard Concours d’Elegance winner, Dorade, a leading yachting journalist described his racing experience as…” a great privilege and honor to sail on one of the greatest ocean racer’s ever.”
Rebecca and Firefly enjoyed a competive romp around the course in the Spirit of Tradition class today with Rebecca holding her own on the leader board this evening. Unfortunately an incident rounding the ‘Chippy’ #3 mark marred the day for Nordwind and Charm 111 with a protest being heard tomorrow.
Amongst the Carriacou sloops in the Traditional Class friendly local rivals Eli Fuller’s Zemi and Alexis Andrews Genesis together screamed over the start line giving their ‘sister-ships’ plenty of space!
The daily hospitality served up by the Panerai Lounge at Antigua Yacht Club Marina makes a welcome and much appreciated dockside stop before or after racing. Competitors are welcome here and alongside the generous helping of complimentary drinks and delicacies served from breakfast until sundown, they can view video footage of the day’s race….a perfect venue to relax, rewind and recover for another exciting race day tomorrow!
The official regatta merchandiser and crew uniform supplier, 'On Deck' continued brisk business from their booth on the AntiguaYacht Club lawn ahead of this evenings staged special Presentation by Halsey Herreshoff and Terry Nathan.
