GET ONBOARD FREE THIS SATURDAY Monday 18th June 2012
The international regatta season may have ended with Antigua Sailing Week early in May, but sailing enthusiasts are still out on the water each week honing their skills.
During the planning stage of Antigua Sailing Week 2012 there were many discussions about how to get more Antiguans and Barbudans involved in Sailing Week and sailing generally, and one of the conversations we had was about using the quieter summer months to give people the opportunity to try it for themselves.
To that end, this weekend sees ‘Get Onboard’ taking place. The initiative is being led by commodore Elizabeth Jordan of the Antigua Yacht Club in English Harbour. She says of ‘Get Onboard’. "We have been really successful in getting lots of children involved in sailing and learning to swim through the National Sailing Academy. However many of the children’s parents, or friends, and the children in schools’ we are not yet teaching due to having reached maximum capacity, are curious about sailing but have not had the opportunity to find out more information.”
This Saturday is therefore time to people to try for themselves, and for FREE. From 11am – 6 pm the Antigua Yacht Club instructors, lead by Karl James, will be on hand to show adults and children what sailing entails, answer your questions, and let you ‘Get Onboard’ with them. The National Sailing Academy will also be on hand for children and Ondeck will be offering people from 8 -80 the opportunity to experience sailing on a crewed yacht.
Anyone wishing to ‘Get Onboard’ should come prepared with hat, sunscreen and a positive attitude. Suitable clothing is shorts & t-shirt. Drinks and food will be on sale for those who prefer to watch from land.
For more information please call the Antigua Yacht Club on 460-1799 or just turn up on Saturday.
