ANTIGUA SAILING WEEK ANNOUNCES THE REBIRTH OF ITS YACHTING WORLD ROUND ANTIGUA RACE!
Tuesday 9th August 2011
Sojana – record holder of the Yachting World Round Antigua Race.

The organisers of Antigua Sailing Week are delighted to announce the return of the Yachting World Round Antigua Race for Antigua Sailing Week 2012. Different for 2012, however, is that it will be an optional race to take place on Saturday, April 28, the day before Antigua Sailing Week officially starts. As an optional race, it will be open to all yachts, whether or not entered in Antigua Sailing Week, and will be scored separately from the other Antigua Sailing Week races.

Classes for the race will include maxi and racing, sport boat, cruising, multihull, bareboat and classic classes. To be held only a few days after Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta finishes, it will be an ideal way for many classics to complete their Caribbean racing season and it will provide an excellent day of practice for boats preparing to compete in Antigua Sailing Week’s full week of racing.

Yachting World Magazine is once again proud to be the sponsor of Antigua Sailing Week’s Round Antigua Race and encourages yachtsmen to take on the challenge of breaking the existing Round Antigua Race elapsed time record, currently held by the Farr-designed 115 foot, Sojana, which completed the race in 4 hours, 37 minutes and 43 seconds in 2009.

Kathy Lammers, Chairman of the Regatta Organising Committee commented: “We’re very excited to have Yachting World Magazine sponsor the Round Antigua Race once again this year. Making the change to an optional race has already been extremely well received in the yachting community and with the new format we expect to attract a much larger variety of classes, including everything from the most serious racing boats to beautiful classics and family cruisers!”

The elapsed time winner of Antigua Sailing Week’s 2012 Yachting World Round Antigua Race will be awarded the Yachting World Trophy at the awards presentation to be held in conjunction with the Antigua Sailing Week Welcome Party on the evening of Saturday, April 28, following completion of the Race. Trophies will also be awarded to the corrected time winner and to winners of 1st through 3rd places in each class.

Antigua Sailing Week also features a Guadeloupe to Antigua Race to be held next year on April 27, the day prior to the Yachting World Round Antigua Race. This event is held in conjunction with Antigua Yacht Club and serves as a feeder race for boats coming from islands to the south of Antigua. The race is open to all, whether or not entered in Antigua Sailing Week, and also boasts an elapsed time record waiting to be broken. In 2004, Bob Miller’s 140-foot Briand schooner, Mari-Cha IV, set an amazing record of 2 hours, 18 minutes and 42 seconds!
