ANTIGUA RACER SNAKE CENSUS Monday 29th March 2010
The Offshore Islands Conservation Programme (OICP) of which the EAG is a partner is currently conducting a census of our Antiguan racer snakes on Great Bird Island and we welcome any help that you can volunteer towards this effort.
For this aspect of our conservation work, activities are conducted mostly on weekends and involve camping on the island from Friday evening to Sunday morning. Reading material can be made available prior to the trips. The census is directed by a field biologist who would offer clear mentorship on best-practices for capturing racer snakes, how to process these snakes once they are caught, record the information and best-practices for their release. There will also be opportunities to do bird monitoring while on Great Bird Island. Work is performed mainly in the early morning and late afternoon while the rest of your day would be free for taking a swim and simply enjoying being away from the hustle and bustle of Antigua, albeit for a short while.
We have a limited number of camping tents, bedrolls, cooking apparatus and eating utensils available for your use. Transportation to and from Bird Island would be provided.
