QUEENS WITH A CAUSE Monday 18th June 2012
When one thinks of Queen of Carnival, modeling, elegance, poise, grace and carriage are just some of the things that come to mind. But for the delegates in this year’s competition, hardwork, dedication and giving back are being focused on as well, which has led to a newly formed relationship with the Care Project.
The 2012 contestants will be partnering with the Care Project, home to children with special needs at the Holberton Hospital, as part of their charity for this year. The young ladies will be making several visits to the five children being housed at the home in hopes of developing a family bond with them.
Media Consultant for the Queens Committee, Tasheka Lavann explains the thought behind the initiative. “I find that in the field of pageantry here in Antigua we tend to get caught up in the glitz and glamour and stray away from what is more important. This committee is ensuring that we prepare these girls to become ambassadors for their country and with that comes the responsibility of giving back and what better way to do so than with children”.
Lavann hopes to get the corporate community as well as members of the general public on board. Master of Finnes and Manager of the Care Project, Alton Forde views the partnership as a critical one. He explains that the home has been adopted by several entities and individuals and they continue to work towards positively impacting the youth there.
