CARNIVAL KICKS OFF Monday 14th May 2012
The message from the Carnival Development Committee (CDC) was clear – Carnival 2012 is definitely on and this time around sponsors would be getting their money’s worth. The occasion was the media launch of the annual festivity held at the Grand Royal Antiguan Resort, which brought together sponsors, potential sponsors, artistes and others.
“Every house that is built gets cracks over the years. We are here to repair those cracks. We’re here to repair the relationship with the stakeholders and with our sponsors this year,” said the new CDC Chairman Kayode O’Marde.
Each title sponsor was given the chance to showcase their products to a national audience during the event that was broadcast live, including on state television and OBSERVER Radio. The aim was to stem declining interest from sponsors and to ramp up the publicity given to businesses that pump major funds into the festivity.
The benefit of sponsorship, explained Cecelia Thwaites of the National Festivals Office, is that sponsors are being provided with “specialised packages.” Minister responsible for Carnival Eleston Adams agrees with the approach being taken by the CDC, adding that similar publicity should be given to each business throughout carnival. Almost all aspects of carnival were put on show during the more than two-hour launch. The theme of Carnival 2012 is “In Living Colour.
