SECURITY INITIATIVE TO BE LAUNCHED IN THE NATIONAL PARKS AREA
Tuesday 26th January 2010

The Antigua and Barbuda National Parks Authority is continuing on its drive to make the National Parks area safe and secure for residents and visitors alike.

Following on the heels of an incident in the Nelson’s Dockyard area over 10 months ago, the private and public sector sought to collaborate to have an efficient security system installed within the environs of the yachting community.

This initial effort saw approximately seven high tech surveillance cameras being erected at strategic points, however, the station base for this operation had to be relocated due to signal and reception problems.

The relocation exercise has made it possible for the final complement of eight cameras to be installed over the course of the next two weeks when the initiative will be officially launched. According to Chairman of the National Parks Authority, Mr. Claude Anthony, “We will be able to detect and monitor all activity within the confines of the national parks once the installation and testing process is completed.”
He continued that, “Since the relocation of the surveillance base, the system at the Dow’s Hill site has signal and reception capacities as far as the St. Jame’s Club Red Hill area.”

The Hon. John Maginley, Minister of Tourism with responsibility for National Parks has welcomed the continued upgrade and implementation of security features in this area and other such tourist attractions.

“The installation of high tech CCTV cameras is part of the Government’s Safety and Security Strategy, which entails combating all incidents of criminal wrongdoings in the country,” says Minister Maginley.
He continues that, “The primary focus is to improve the quality of life and personal safety of all people, citizens and visitors alike.” The National Parks area consists of Horsford Hill, to the entire English Harbour and Piccadilly area.
