DOCKYARD AT 50 IS A MODEL OF RESTORATION Friday 18th November 2011
Nelson’s Dockyard is 50. Well, not technically, the Dockyard was an active naval facility, primarily used for the servicing of British warships – and base of operations for British naval hero Horatio Nelson who was based there between 1784 and 1787 – back in the 1700s. But it was 1961, 50 years ago, that the facility, de-commissioned since 1890, was officially re-opened as a heritage tourism site.
