Jolly Harbour Yacht Club’s summer youth sailing camp is now in full swing and will continue until the end of summer. The current session has a total of nine students with two spots filled by local Antiguan children sponsored by JHYC’s fundraising efforts. The camp is supervised by three sailing instructors who will also be on board for the launch of the National Sailing Academy sailing lessons scheduled to begin in September in which local students have the opportunity to learn sailing as a part of their regular school curriculum. Those currently registered in the summer camp are enthusiastically practising their skills on Laser and Hobie 16 sailing dinghies and improving every day. Some participants are visiting Antigua on vacation from Europe and have joined the camp in order to add something a little different to their summer vacations. Signs promoting the summer camp were generously donated by SignPro and they have been a big help in spreading news of the camp’s availability.

In addition to the summer camp, the JHYC youth sailing program operates every Saturday throughout the year and all Antiguan-born children are welcome to participate and learn to sail for free. This opportunity has been enthusiastically accepted by many youths over the past couple of years and it is anticipated that its popularity will continue in the upcoming fall season. In addition to the fleet of Lasers, Hobie 16’s, and a Sport 16, among others, the JHYC youth program now has a chase boat consisting of a 9.5 foot RIB with 8 hp outboard which was generously sponsored in part by Yamaha Outdoor World , for which the club and students are very grateful!

In order to keep this summer program running at a cost that makes it a viable option for most interested students, JHYC will host a ‘smart dinner/dance’ fundraising event at Al Porto Restaurant in Jolly Harbour towards the end of August. Details will be passed on in Antigua’s Yachting Insider as soon as they come available, or visit our Facebook page for the latest information.
