TWO FIRSTS FOR JHR CARIBBEAN REGATTA Tuesday 2nd November 2010
The JHR Annual Caribbean Regatta is drawing near and the excitement is building. Take place the weekend of the 13th and 14th of November registration will take place on the 12th.
This regatta has been active for over 15 years and welcomes some of the best sailors in the Caribbean to take part every year.
This year two wondeful new additions will make this event very special. The first is the addition of a new class of boats, Carriacou sloops. Carriacou sloops are in a class of their own, originally being built on the beaches in Carriacou, once the boat is complete, men, women and children from neighboring villages get together and have a party as they push the boat into the ocean. This event is a reenactment of a tradition that has been carried on since the 1830’s.
Secondly for the first time some of the youths taking part in the Jolly Harbour Youth Yacht Club Sailing Programme will be joining boat crew to race in the regatta. Not only are they learning a skill that will indeed help them become more secure individuals but it also offers the children future opportunities to work in the boating industry.
An added feature of the Youth Sailing Program includes free swimming lessons as the children need to be able to swim at least 25 yards with a buoyancy aid which must be worn at all times while in the water. There are around 10 children in the dinghy sailing lessons and 12 children in the swimming lessons every Saturday. There is a maximum of 12 children per session and the sessions typically last for 12 weeks.
Come join in the fun in Jolly Harbour and sail with the best or join in the festivities on Saturday night where there will be raffle prizes and a live band.
Sponsors include but aren’t limited to JHR (Jolly Harbour Real Estate), Foredeck Bar, Jolly Harbour Yacht Club, Carib Lager, Premier CRU. Media Sponsors include Search Antigua and Carib AZ
