IWC LAUNCHES IT'S RED LETTER DAY FOR EDUCATION
Friday 12th October 2012

With Education as its mission, the women of the International Women's Club of Antigua and Barbuda will launch its fifth golf tournament fundraiser on Saturday, November 3 at the Cedar Valley Golf Club, to help fulfill its yearly goal of providing scholarships to young women in Antigua and Barbuda to study at the tertiary level.

This year, IWC continues to set its sights on merging this unique blend of sports and education which it feels represents these two very important elements of a well-grounded community.

“I think we were successful at doing that last year” says Cath White, the IWC’s Secretary and chief organizer of the event. “We attracted lots of businessmen-golfers and representatives from the corporate community — seventy-two (72) golfers in all. We want to continue now and in the future to expand and attract young golfers to the event, and also young people to the membership. This year, we’ll begin stepping up our membership drive and design programs that will interest them.”

It is worth reiterating that sponsors attract coverage of the best type, from the world of sports as well as education, and so the Club is proud to have the returning support of Virgin Atlantic, and the first-time support of Scotiabank, both of whom are very much committed to local causes for education.  In addition to educational scholarships, sponsorship funds support adult literacy and dyslexia. As far as the golf is concerned, there are various prize categories for teams and each team consists of four golfers who pay EC$200 each or EC$800 per team. Fees include cart fees, a lunch ticket, two free drinks, snacks, a gift bag, golf balls/tees, pitch mark repairers, etc. There are prizes for Team First Gross, Team First Net, Women’s Longest Drive, Men’s Longest Drive, Nearest Pin Men, Nearest Pin Women, Seniors Longest Drive and Super Seniors Longest Drive. There is a Special “Hole- in- one” prize on Hole # 8, courtesy of Caribbean Helicopters

Players receive Champagne post-round, a keepsake glass and free entry to a players- only draw, for two return Premium Economy tickets to London ( excluding surcharges), courtesy of Virgin Atlantic.  After a fine lunch, there is a prize-giving ceremony, an auction and a 50/50 cash raffle draw. Registration is from 4pm – 6pm on Thursday 1st and Friday 2nd November. There is a 9 a.m. tee off Shotgun start on Saturday.  Unique attractions include closest to the hole from inside the bunker, closest to the green 100 yards out with a putter, closest to the hole with a chip from the fringe, and a “Bucket of Balls” contest. Some Fun bets will take place after the auction of which the IWC will take 30% of the winnings.

The International Women’s Club of Antigua and Barbuda was founded in 1986 as the American Women’s Club, with the purpose of enabling American women and wives of Americans to become acquainted with each other, and to create a forum in which the membership could enjoy the history, culture and landscape of the island.  Members later voted to change the name to the International Women’s Club of Antigua & Barbuda to accommodate the diversity of members the Club started to attract.

Members pay dues, and the Club has a President, a Board, a monthly newsletter, book club, a “lunch bunch”, golfing, Mah Jong groups, and has produced a 2-volume cook book “From Market to Table.”  In addition to the Golf Tournament, which specifically benefits the Scholarship Fund, the IWC has several fundraisers each year, including a Jumble Sale to raise funds for its annual Christmas Hampers for the needy.

Scholarships were awarded starting in 1994. At that time, the Club gave two scholarships per year to students entering Antigua State Collage and the award of $1,000 US each, covered the tuition amount.  When the IWC begun major fundraising events and auctions, the amounts increased.  In one given year, the IWC awarded more than EC$100,000 in scholarships. In the past few years, the average total amount awarded was EC$40,000 to13 to15 recipients. To date, the Club has awarded almost EC$1.2 million representing approximately 300 scholarships.
