ABHS EDUCATION OUTREACH PROGRAMME
Friday 6th April 2018

The Antigua & Barbuda Humane Society’s Education Outreach Programme is designed to excite, interest and engage elementary, secondary, and tertiary level school students. The programme is interactive and teaches students about responsible animal care and ownership. It also encourages students to be more compassionate towards animals and helps them understand why and how to foster appropriate relationships between humans and animals.

The Humane Society recently hosted children from the Agape Preschool and Daycare at Antigua’s Donkey Sanctuary. This was their second visit to the Sanctuary. On their first visit, the children happily adopted Stevie, a donkey that had become blind due to head injuries he sustained when he was hit by a car in St. John’s. On this most recent visit, the children adopted Daisy who came into the Sanctuary with her mom, Hilda, in March 2011.

As part of the adoption programme, the children received an adoption certificate for Daisy and they will also receive the Sanctuary’s bi-monthly newsletter.

After their visit to the Donkey Sanctuary, the children made their way to the Humane Society’s animal shelter, which houses several dogs and cats. They spent most of their time in the cattery where they had an enjoyable time playing with and petting Pepper, the kitten.  Pepper, as her name indicates, is sassy, a fur ball of energy, and loves children.

The Antigua & Barbuda Humane Society invites schools to visit the animal shelter and Antigua’s Donkey Sanctuary during its hours of operation (Monday – Saturday from 10:00am – 4:00pm). Schools are encouraged to notify the Humane Society in advance of the visit by contacting the office at 461-4957 or abhumane@candw.ag

The Antigua & Barbuda Humane Society is an animal welfare organization that was established in 1991 with one major goal in mind – to make a difference for all animals in Antigua and Barbuda through the prevention of cruelty and the protection of animals. The Humane Society is registered as a non-profit corporation under the laws of Antigua & Barbuda and is audited annually by Grant Thornton.  The Humane Society supports the local government and community institutions with matters relating to the role of animals in society and is committed to assisting the public and visitors with their concerns about animals.
