AYC ANNOUNCES ASW PRIZE FOR ROUND THE ISLAND RACE Friday 13th January 2012
Antigua Yacht Club is excited to announce that Antigua Sailing Week will sponsor a special new prize for the Round the Island Race to be held on Saturday, January 21. The prize will be a complimentary entry fee to Antigua Sailing Week 2012 and will be awarded to the boat that has never previously entered the Round the Island Race that finishes the race with the best corrected time. So if you haven’t entered the Round the Island Race prior to this year and if you hope to enter Antigua Sailing Week 2012, you won’t want to miss your chance to be the lucky winner of this great prize. It has no cash value but could provide savings of up to several hundred dollars, depending on the size of your boat.
Antigua Yacht Club’s Round the Island Race is an event that has taken place in Antigua for many years. In the past it has at times been held over two days but in 2012 sailors will race all the way around the island in one day, weather permitting, which it is hoped will attract more participants who may not have time to participate over the course of two days. There will be three starts with smaller, slower boats starting early and bigger, faster boats starting later, with the intent of having the entire fleet finish as close together as possible. The race’s overall winner will be awarded the skipper’s weight in rum!
All yachts are invited to participate in this fantastic event that circumnavigates the beautiful island of Antigua. In particular, Antigua Yacht Club wishes to extend a special invitation to boats from neighbouring islands including Guadeloupe, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Barths and St. Maarten, among others.

Antigua Sailing Week, now in its 45th year, will be held from April 29 to May 4, 2012 and is a week-long regatta designed for boats from small cruisers to racing maxis and everything in between. It provides five full days of exciting racing, a lay day in the middle and a week of great events and parties. New this year is the Yachting World Round Antigua Race to be held on Saturday, April 28, which is open to all boats, whether or not entered in Antigua Sailing Week. This race will be of special interest to classic yachts still in Antigua after participating in Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta and those boats that practised in the AYC Round the Island Race on January 21. The coveted Yachting World Trophy will be awarded to the elapsed time winner and participants are encouraged to take on the challenge of breaking the existing elapsed time record, currently held by the overall winner of Antigua Sailing Week 2011, the Farr-designed 115-foot, Sojana, which completed the race in 4 hours, 37 minutes and 43 seconds in 2009.
