SPOTLIGHT ON OPTIMIST COACH OMARI SCOTT Friday 30th June 2023
MEET THE COACH: Omari Scott, Lead Coach for the 2023 Optimist North American Championships.
"My name is Omari Scott and I’m from the tiny island of Antigua. I earned a sports management and marketing degree from Hampton University in VA, where I was a member of the sailing team for four years. I arrived at Coral Reef Yacht Club in 2014, after serving as the National coach for the islands of St. Lucia and the British Virgin Islands. Currently, I serve as the head optimist coach at Coral Reef Yacht Club, a Varsity sailing coach at Ransom Everglades High School in Miami and coach of the US National Optimist Team.
Over the past 15 years, I have coached at numerous regional and international events. Such events include St. Thomas International Optimist Regatta, Orange Bowl Regatta, Flanders Regatta in Belgium, Trofeo de Palamos in Spain, Schoelcher International Regatta in Martinique, Garda Optimist Meeting, IODA North Americans Championships, IODA European Championships, IODA Optimist World Championships etc. My style of coaching is one of high intensity with a huge focus on the quality of the training sessions.
I am a huge advocate of using the sport as a tool to teach life lessons to young athletes. When I’m not coaching, I enjoy spending quality time with my family, hanging out with friends and of course watching soccer games. This will be my fourth North American Championships and I am excited to work with this group of young talented sailors in my home town and country."
Fun Fact: Omari started sailing at the Antigua Yacht Club and grew up in English Harbour, St. Paul’s, Antigua.
