MAKHOUL FAMILY DONATES $13,500 IN HONOR OF THEIR MOTHER TO SUPPORT CANCER CARE AT SLBMC
Monday 6th October 2025
The Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre (SLBMC) has received a generous donation of $13,500 XCD from the Makhoul family, given in loving memory of their mother, Marie Makhoul, who passed away from ovarian and lung cancer. Of the total, $10,000 was contributed by the family and an additional $3,500 by Arton Capital Antigua & Barbuda, a company managed by one of the sisters, Lisa Makhoul.
This was about honoring our mother in a way that could truly impact others,” said Lisa Makhoul. “She lost her life to a cancer that affects women, and as a family of women, we felt strongly about doing something that could make a difference in the oncology care provided to women here in Antigua & Barbuda. When we heard about the hospital’s appeal for a new mammogram, we knew this was the right thing to support. We understand our contribution does not complete the hospital’s goal, but we hope it inspires other families and corporate citizens to give as well.”
The funds will support SLBMC’s urgent appeal to purchase a new mammogram machine. The hospital’s current unit is outdated, creating challenges with downtime and rescheduled appointments.
“Women helping women—that’s the powerful statement the Makhoul family has made with this gift,” said Salma Crump, SLBMC Head of Marketing & Communications. “The family’s generosity not only honors their mother’s legacy, but also helps strengthen cancer care for the people of Antigua & Barbuda. When others believe in our hospital’s mission, they give—whether it’s funding, their time, or their expertise. That belief is what keeps us moving forward, making it possible for us to do more for our community. We want people to know how deeply grateful we are for families like the Makhoul’s and so many others who continue to stand with us.”
The hospital is currently in the midst of its annual PINKparty campaign—Antigua’s largest fitness and awareness event—culminating on October 16, 2025, at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium. While the event itself is a highlight, community members can also support the campaign by purchasing breast cancer awareness pins or making direct contributions. All funds raised through the PINKparty campaign will go directly toward the purchase of a new mammogram machine for SLBMC.
