SIR LESTER BIRD MOUNT ST. JOHN'S MEDICAL CENTRE

When 37-year-old certified diver Akeam Bretney was recently brought to SLBMC with decompression sickness commonly known as “the bends”our team was ready. Thanks to the hospital’s hyperbaric chamber facility, Akeam received critical care close to home and has made a full recovery. In the photo, he gives the peace sign—a symbol of his strength and resilience.

Decompression sickness occurs when dissolved gases come out of solution in bubbles and can affect various areas of the body after a rapid ascent from deep waters. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is the gold standard for treating this condition, using pressurized oxygen to reduce symptoms and support recovery.

We are incredibly grateful to the Calvin Ayre Foundation for generously gifting our hospital this vital piece of equipment, which helped make this outcome possible. Their support has been a powerful force for good strengthening our capacity to save lives and care for you and your family when it matters most.
