KOFI DELIVERS MASTERCLASS AT ANTIGUA STATE COLLEGE
Monday 23rd November 2009
Art students at the Antigua State College had a special Master Class with visiting visual artist, Alvin Kofi Ferris. The 16 ‘A’ level students and their lecturer, Mark Brown had an opportunity to see how Kofi creates his figurative drawings. There was also a question and answer session, where students learnt more about Kofi’s art journey and how to make a living as an artist.
The latter message is a very important one for Kofi, as he has been a successful artist for more than 15 years: “I have learnt that as an artist I need to be aware of the market I am selling to and that I need to produce work that is accessible, not only in size but also price. As much as I enjoy working on originals, the print line that I have developed, which includes a range of greeting card and small prints is my core business.”
He adds that in today’s technologically led world, art is no longer confined to galleries and private collections: “Art is being used as part of advertising campaigns, book covers, CD covers, for posters and events, when you produce a print and accompanying merchandise, your image lives on and continues to make you money whilst you work on your originals.”
His exhibition and sale will be held from Saturday, November 28 to December 4, in the upstairs Gallery of the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda. The public opening will be from 7 pm and then daily from 10:00 am, except on Sunday, November 29th, when the exhibition will open at 1:00 pm.
