FOUR FIRST TIMERS VIE TO COMPLETE TINMAN ROHR Tuesday 24th March 2015
Competitors in the AUA Tinman Rohr Triathlon
Four Antiguans and Barbudans have signed up for the ultimate 70.3 mile swim, bike and run AUA Tinman Rohr Triathlon challenge set to take place at Morris Bay this Saturday March 28th, 2015.
Veteran cyclist Robert Marsh, accomplished runner Kamar Thomas, triathlete Jerome Henry and Carlos Joseph will all, for the first time, attempt to complete the 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike and 13.1 mile run.
They will be eligible for an EC$500 prize if they are able to complete the race within the allotted 9 hour time limit. In battling for the overall title they will come up against veterans including a former national cycling champion in Andre Simon, who will be making a one off return to his former sport of triathlon in the race he co-founded. Also competing will be veterans Wayne Henry and Timothy Thomas, who will be seeking to complete his third half-iron distance race. Marsh in particular, given his cycling pedigree, is expected to give the veterans a strong challenge for the overall title and the prospect of him challenging his cycling rival Simon for the overall title is a fascinating one. In the women’s meanwhile Lindsay Duffy will be coming up against the likes of the USA’s Andres Onetta in seeking to secure the female title.
The ultimate 70.3 Tinman Rohr challenge which gets underway at 9am won’t be the only attraction of the day however as over 200 participants are expected to take part in shorter distances later in the afternoon.
There’s options for every age group starting from the 6&Unders who will have a go and swim five meters, bike 25 meters and run 25 meters with the approved support of their parents or guardians. The 10 & Under race distance has been reduced by popular demand and will feature a 200 meter swim, 2 k bike and 2 kilometer run. The 14&Unders will take on a 500 m swim, 6 k bike and 2 k run. The 18&Unders, Adults and Teams will also have the option to take part in the 500 m swim, 10 k bike and 2 k run. The more competitive will likely opt for the Sprint distance of a 1 k swim, 18k bike and 5k run which can be competed in by either individuals or teams. For those less inclined to swim or bike there is also the 5k walk and run option which gets underway from 4pm. The awards ceremony then gets underway from 5pm with music by Stonewall Sounds, barbeques and bounce castles for entertainment through the day.
The non-profit event is sponsored by American University of Antigua, Ministry of Tourism, National Olympic Committee, LIME, Cedars Pottery, Big Banana, Horizons Supplies Limited and the Observer Media Group. Interested persons can sign up at www.antiguatinmantriathlon.com
