A & B TEAM EXCELS AT NEVIS 'MACCA X' TRIATHLON Tuesday 19th November 2013
A team from Antigua & Barbuda put in a dominant display in the Nevis ‘Macca X’ International Triathlon held on Saturday, 16 November, capturing five major trophies at the event.
The ten member team made the trip to Nevis via boat through support provided by the Wadadli Triathlon Club – which is led by Club President Cleofoster Harris.
In Nevis the team was led by veteran Wayne “Ironman” Henry, who captured the first place individual overall trophy for himself in the faster sprint distance of a 750m swim, 20k bike and 10k run.
Antigua & Barbuda youth athlete, 15 year old Charles Edwards, captured second place in the under 20 category for the sprint distance. Young Edwards is the reigning Tinman Rohr Mini Triathlon champion.
A strong bike and run from Timothy Thomas was not enough to help him recover from a weak swim and he fell just short of the podium positions in fifth place.
Reigning national female champion Alisha David had a dominant display in the sprint to run home first overall, only to be later stripped of the title for having mistakenly made a wrong turn in the 5k run.
David, who is also the reigning Tinman Rohr champion, was officially disqualified.
However, the team still took home the first female sprint trophy as this pushed Margarita Fernandez Lores to first overall. Lindsay Duffy also took home the third spot in the sprint division for the team.
National runner Nevil Nicholls joined a relay and had the fastest run leg but his team fell short of the top three. Other team members met their aim of completing a triathlon for the very first time.
Antigua & Barbuda’s Rory Butler placed second overall in the long distance race of a 1,500m swim, 60k bike and 10k run. Butler placed behind two time Ironman World Champion Chris ‘Macca’ McCormack who came first, while female European Champion Jane Hanson placed third overall and first female.
The team’s participation in the race was made possible by the support of the Wadadli Triathlon Club and boat captain David Mendes.
