GUADELOUPE PRO TRIATHLETE SET FOR AUA TINMAN ROHR TRIATHLON Wednesday 21st August 2013
The AUA Tinman Rohr Triathlon is set to return this year for the second year running and already a premier triathlete of international standing has been confirmed for the September 22, 2013 event.
12 times Guadeloupe National Champion Olivier Noglotte, who for years has competed at the highest level of the sport, will lead the regional and international field for the grueling half-iron distance triathlon.
In 2012, the event featured French pro Benjamin Sanson and Argentinian pro Claudio Delpueche, but organisers have focused attentions this year on attracting regional athletes of global renown.
“It was great having Benji and Claudio last year but this year we had a chance to bring in Olivier so we jumped at the chance to support our own great Caribbean athletes,” said event co-founder Andre Simon.
“We’ve had some great interest from the region and further afield since last year and we’re hoping to see an even more exciting field of athletes this time around.” The event, which includes a 2k swim, 90k bike and 21k run done back to back, is again being backed by its title sponsor, the American University of Antigua (AUA). The race, which is named in honour of former AUA student and triathlete Jonathan Rohr, also aims to promote healthy lifestyles and shed light on the condition that ultimately took the life of Jonathan.
Despite living a healthy lifestyle, Rohr passed away in his sleep at the age of 25 due to an underlying heart condition which was diagnosed posthumously as hypertrophic cardiac myopathy (HCM).
Through the event and with the partnership of AUA, participants will be enlightened on the importance of precautionary medical checks to avoid falling victim to such underlying medical conditions.
Early registration discounts are being offered until September 1st when the price will move back up.
The challenge is open to teams as well as individuals and persons can sign up to tackle any one portion of the event and will be placed randomly into a team by organisers.
There are also a number of less challenging events including a mini triathlon of a 400m swim, 10k bike and 2k run which will be open to people of all ages eager to try their first triathlon.
Persons seeking a fitness challenge can also sign up for the 5k walk/run portion of the fitness event.
The event sponsored by: the American University of Antigua (AUA), the Blue Waters Hotel, the Jolly Beach Resort, the Ministry of Tourism, Horizons Supplies Ltd, Big Banana Ltd, Subway, the Observer Media Group, 365Antigua.com, the National Olympic Committee and the Antigua and Barbuda Triathlon Association.
