NATIONAL SPORTS AWARDS HIGHLIGHTS Monday 24th June 2013
General Secretary of the ABFA, Gordon “Banks” Derrick was in fine form as he presented the feature address at the Annual Na-tional Sports Awards, on Thursday night, June 20, at the Royal Antigua Resort.
Derrick conceded that even though Antiguan Sports men and women train hard like other in-ternational athletes, they do not always possess the mind set to make them winners. He said for our sports men and women to be winners they have to think like winners.
Derrick also chided parents for athletes stop-ping sports because they have to study for ex-ams. The first thing parents do is to stop their children from participating in sports when it comes on to exam time. He explained that a physically fit person will possess a healthy mind to do well in their academics.
The Sports Award Ceremony was one of the best put on by the Ministry of Sports with some innovation featuring the Christ the King High School Choir, the St. Joseph’s Academy, and a boxing display by members of the Uprising Box-ing Gym.
Tamiko Butler was voted Sports woman of the year, for a second year, and Jymes Bridges (jr) won the Sports man of the year, while Lorraine Richardson took the Mind Sports Award for her skills at Domino.
The hosts of the night’s ceremony were Sen, Joanne Massiah and Dave George. Both did a great job in entertaining the guests.
