THINGS TO DO IN MONTSERRAT

HIKING

Montserrat is a great destination for the adventurous traveller, with 9 world class hiking trails covering the north of the island. The majority of hiking trails run through the Centre Hills region, which is renowned for its biological diversity and rich vegetation.  Along the Centre Hills Trail, it might be possible to spot some resident tropical birds, including Montserrat’s rare national bird, the endemic oriole. Other regionally endemic species that might be found are the mountain chicken, actually a type of frog, and the rare galliwasp, which is half-snake, half-lizard.  Guides can be booked through the National Trust and a trails map is available for sale for EC$10.

BIRD WATCHING

The lush, forested Centre Hills is renowned for its biological diversity and is home to the thirty-four (34) species of resident land birds and migrant songbirds that inhabit the island. Birdwatchers will delight in a chance to spot Montserrat's rare national bird, the endemic Montserrat Oriole. A comprehensive Guide to the flora and fauna of the Centre Hills of Montserrat is also available for sale at these two institutions for a price of EC$35 (US$13).  Birding guides are available through the Montserrat National Trust and can be hired by request.

TURTLE WATCHING

The island has several black sandy beaches which serve as nesting sites for three of the world's seven species of sea turtle: the Green Turtle, the Hawksbill and the Loggerhead. The turtle nesting season runs from August to September so make plans to be here at that time. For information on turtle watching contact the Government's Agriculture Department at (664) 491 2075

DIVING AND SNORKELLING

Montserrat’s volcano had an unexpected effect on our coral reefs and the underwater world is healthier than ever. The pyroclastic flows, which flowed into the sea in the south have brought huge rocky boulders into the sea, new substrates for reefs while the ash was quickly removed by tidal currents. Coral, fish, sponges, and all the other creatures had time to recover from the stresses of human activities. Their larvae drifted with the currents and settled in the reefs of the north. As a result, we see our dive spots teeming with more life than ever before.   There are 2 dive shops on the island – ScubaMontserrat (www.divedestinationmontserrat.com) and The Green Monkey (www.divemontserrat.com) – to serve your needs.

KAYAKING

Discover a unique Eco adventure in one of the best unspoiled coastal areas in the Caribbean. Experienced guides will ensure you enjoy a fun-filled, exciting kayaking adventure on the beautiful east coast of Montserrat. Both dive shops offer kayaking trips and equipment.

FISHING

There are several fishing boats for hire that can take you out to fish in shallow or deep water, and there are quite a variety of fish to be caught including marlin, Wahoo, Dolphin, King and Tuna. Shore fishing is also a popular leisure pastime in Montserrat, and there are a number of casual fishing spots such as Old Road Bay, Little Bay and Rendezvous Bay.  There is also an Open International Fishing Tournament in October.

YACHTING

Montserrat is an ideal stop for yachts and other small craft, which can anchor safely at Little Bay in the North of the island. A number of yachts currently call into Montserrat, especially following Sailing Week in Antigua, which is held at the end of April/early May. While the yachting sector is still quite small, there is a huge potential for expansion, especially as there are plans to develop a yacht marina and new town at Little Bay. The procedure for landing, as well the customs declaration form can be downloaded here.
