BISHOO DEDICATES EMERGING PLAYER AWARD TO HIS DAD
Tuesday 13th September 2011

Bridgetown, Barbados – West Indies leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo has dedicated his Emerging Player Award at the annual International Cricket Council’s Award ceremony on Monday to his father.

He said the award came as a bit of a surprise and dedicated it to his father Mohanlall, who died when he was eight years old.

“I could not believe it when I was nominated for the ICC Emerging Player of the Year but to win it feels great. I’m very happy. I would like to dedicate the award to my father. He played a great role in my life and encouraged me to play cricket. After he died I made a promise to always give my best and reach for the top,” Bishoo said on Monday.

“I also want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has helped me along the way and also a special ‘thank you’ to the fans who have supported me. I hope I can continue to represent the West Indies with pride and improve my bowling and keep taking as many international wickets as I can. I’d like to thank the support staff and my team-mates of the West Indies and Guyana for all the support and guidance.”

He added: “It has been a challenging start to my international career so far but it has been an enjoyable start. The highlights so far have been playing in the World Cup, playing my first Test match on home soil, and playing against India in the Digicel Test Series. I have learned a lot in a short space of time and want to continue learning.”

The 25-year-old who made his international debut during the ICC Cricket World Cup in Asia earlier this year, copped the prize from a four-man field which also included West Indies left-hander Darren Bravo.

Bishoo made a very good start to his career at the highest level. He made his Test debut against Pakistan at home at the Guyana National Stadium in May and played a major role in the West Indies win. He has so far played five Test matches and taken 21 wickets at 35.42 each.

He has also been impressive in 11 ODIs with 19 wickets at 21.57 each and another five wickets in two T20 Internationals at 9.6 apiece.
