In advance of a competitive football season in the ABFA Premier League, Digicel has inked a sponsorship deal with the Empire Football Club - one of the most storied clubs in the history of the league hailing from the Grays Green community.

The Empire Football club was founded in 1962 and they have added thirteen Premier Division titles to their name; winning the last title in 2000 which completed a four-peat. Although the team has not won any premier division titles in almost two decades, they have remained consistently relevant and has been one of the top teams in the league. However, this year, the dynasty team has promised a fourteenth title for their fans.

President of the Empire Football Club, Lennie Quashie, said he is honoured to have Digicel as a partner and he is confident that this new partnership will yield more great things for the club.

“We are delighted to be working with Digicel on this initiative. This partnership will support the team in terms of nutrition and administrative expenses and ultimately help us to compete at the highest level. Digicel is no stranger to our beloved Grays Green community as they have supported Halcyon Steel Orchestra, our brothers and sisters, to a Panorama Championship this year. We at Empire Sports Club will be taking the same level of confidence and positive attitude to the Antigua Recreation Ground (ARG) and I know our fans will be very proud of our young and talented players who will represent the club this season”, he said.

Team captain, Shakimba “Yaya” Williams, is very confident of another championship and he is thankful for the support from Digicel.

“We have been training very hard and I can see my teammates are excited and ready to play. We are confident that we can bring home another championship with the help of Digicel”.

Janice Sutherland, Digicel CEO, welcomed the club and considered them as family.

“When the Empire Sports club approached us, we knew this was the beginning of a great relationship because the Digicel brand was built on supporting community initiatives through sports and we are happy that they considered us for this opportunity.” She continued; “As a company, we continually strive for excellence and there is no doubt in my mind that the Empire Football Club will do the same and hopefully this support will assist in bringing home the championship cup this year.”

Digicel is the exclusive telecommunications provider of the Empire Football Club.
