DIGICEL CRICKET EXPERIENCE FOR YOUNG CRICKETERS
Wednesday 5th March 2014

A Big Deal for Antiguan & Barbudan Youth

The Digicel Cricket Experience Day on 1 March was a dream come true for 31 aspiring young Antiguan and Barbudan cricketers.  The excitement was high as the students took to the field at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium for a full morning of lessons with West Indian players Darren Sammy, Darren Bravo, Kieran Powell, Nikita Miller and Jason Holder.

The West Indies teammates volunteered their time and support to pass on some valuable cricket knowledge to the youngsters. Darren Sammy was as excited as the young students at the opportunity to interact with the children. “We owe it to the youngsters. We must give back to our communities,” he said. “The children are eager to learn and we are happy to be here sharing our experience with them.”

The morning started with the Windies players identifying the fast bowlers, spin bowlers and bats men among the young cricketers. Each group then had the opportunity to interact and enjoy some one-on-one time with the players and all of the students performed at their best, grateful for the opportunity to meet their favourite stars.

Asha Cornelius, a 13-year-old from Princess Margaret School commented that “I love to play, I am always playing cricket even inside the house. My mom doesn’t like it and she would say ‘Why Asha, why?’, but I know what I am doing, I won’t break anything.”

These youngsters are bright sparks in the future of Antigua and Barbuda cricket, and everyone hopes they may one day see their names on the West Indies line-up.
